Celebrate ten years of Pioneer Works at the 2022 Village Fête After Party—the not-to-be-missed after party to our annual gala. As a non-profit, we rely on the generosity of our community to continue doing the work we’re grateful to do. All ticket proceeds from this annual fundraising event provide critical revenue that sustains Pioneer Works and our ability to champion underrepresented and emerging artists.

The After Party features a night of interdisciplinary programming that’s representative of our mission. Tickets include access to a special performance by Ata Kak, DJ sets by Miho Hatori and NAEEM, as well as activations, complimentary open bars, and late-night snacks throughout the space. Come out and dress up for this year’s psychedelic dream theme—expect a few surprises in store…

About the Artists

Ata Kak

Ata Kak is the Ghanaian electronic/rap/highlife icon who kick-started the Awesome Tapes From Africa phenomenon. Ata Kak’s Obaa Sima cassette was first self-released in Ghana in 1994 to little recognition or interest. Yet when American musicologist Brian Shimkovitz stumbled upon the tape at a street stall in Cape Coast, Ghana eight years later, it became the stimulus for him to launch the Awesome Tapes from Africa blog. The music on the recording—an amalgam of highlife, Twi language rap, funk, hip-hop, and electronica—traverses a pop music landscape that encapsulates international modes while reflecting contemporary Ghanaian music of the period. After more than a decade of searching, Brian finally tracked down the singer and released the LP officially in March 2015.

Naeem

Baltimore-hailing Naeem has spent much of the last decade stretching his creative legs in a variety of ways: he’s hit the road with artists ranging from the Avalanches and Bon Iver to Big Red Machine and Mouse on Mars, took part in a 37d03d residency in Berlin, and was a 2019 Music Resident at Pioneer Works. Through it all, he built the songs that make up Startisha, a record a half-decade in the making that featured Naeem pulling from creative circles all across the U.S. to craft a truly unique document of sound.

Miho Hatori

Miho Hatori is an artist/music producer/vocalist/improviser. Formerly of the legendary NYC group Cibo Matto. Her creation style is borderless. She makes visual and video installations and does art performances with music and sounds. Miho is originally from Tokyo but has been working and living in NYC for too many years.
