Fall Equinox Party

Pioneer Works invites our supporters to join us on Tuesday, October 5 for our 2021 Fall Equinox Party! This event is free for Pioneer Works artists, residents, supporters and members.

This event will feature immersive culinary happenings by Tables of Contents, a performance by our Alumni Music Resident Holland Andrews, a DJ set by Little Dynasty, a herbalist workshop with Olamina Botanicals, back to school portraits with Rachel Stern, and tastings by Sandeman Port.

Tables of Contents brings together readers and eaters, using food as an entry point for experiencing books, music, art, and culture. Founded by chef Evan Hanczor in 2012, Tables of Contents has presented dinners inspired by classic fiction (like The Sun Also Rises and Their Eyes Were Watching God) and curated collaborations with over 100 renowned writers and artists in cities ranging from Brooklyn to New Orleans to Milan. Their first publishing project, the Tables of Contents Community Cookbook, was released in February 2021.

Holland Andrews is a New York based avant-garde vocalist, composer, improviser, and performance artist whose work is based on emotionality in its many forms. In their work, Andrews focuses on the abstraction of operatic and extended-technique voice to build soundscapes encompassing both catharsis and the interplay between dissonance and resonance to tell stories of the interior worlds of humanity. Frequently highlighting themes surrounding vulnerability and healing, Andrews arranges music with voice and clarinet to serve as a vessel for these themes. As a vocalist, their influences stem from a dynamic range of musical stylings including contemporary opera, free jazz, theater, as well as ambient, drone, and noise music.

Eric Banta aka Little Dynasty is owner and operator of Names You Can Trust & Independent Grand in Brooklyn. Through the Names You Can Trust record label, he has released close to 100 different projects on vinyl from all over the globe and has produced and recorded under alias’ Greenwood Rhythm Coalition, Midnight Lab Band, Beverley Road All Stars, NY Hustlers and Los Taxis.

Olamina Botanicals founder Jess Turner is a clinical herbalist whose practice is centered on helping frontline communities—low-income, working-class, Black, indigenous and people of color communities who experience the “first and worst” impacts of climate change—repair through connection to the land and plants growing around them. In cities, these plants are often discarded as mere weeds. Honored to have arrived at a place where she can be of service to her community, Jess draws strength from her people’s resilience in the face of oppression.

Rachel Stern (b. 1989, NYC) is a photographer whose work considers the intersection of beauty and power. Using materials culled from suburban strip malls she creates images which enter into an accessible discourse and, in the spirit of ‘bread and roses’, demand immediate access to beauty. Her work is a kitsch paradise, a queer-washed history, and an attempt at hope. She received her BFA in Photography and the History of Art and Visual Culture in 2011 from the Rhode Island School of Design, attended Skowhegan in 2014, and graduated from Columbia University in 2016 with an MFA in Visual Arts.
