In Progress
Exhibition Series with Katherine Finkelstein
Katherine Finkelstein is a New York-based artist working with the medium of photography. She received her BA from the Bard College photography program and completed her MFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Low-Residency program in 2017. She runs Motherbox Gallery, a natural-light exhibition space, out of her apartment.
Finkelstein used her time at Pioneer Works to remix and create new work, which combines—in richly layered surfaces—sunlight, landscape, prisms, and photograms. They’re combined into one singular, silver gelatin plane. She recently returned from a residency at the Mahler & LeWitt Studios in Spoleto, Italy, with materials and film from time spent on a sacred mountain on the tenth anniversary of her sister’s disappearance in the sea, as well as a trip to the coast at La Spiaggia delle Due Sorelle (The Beach of the Two Sisters).
Baxter Street at the Camera Club of New York and Pioneer Works have partnered to bring three photographers from the Baxter Street community to process black and white photography in the darkroom at Pioneer Works, over the course of one month. This residency partnership resulted in three “In Progress” exhibitions at Governors Island, at Nolan Park 8B.
