SECOND SUNDAYS is a monthly series of open studios, live music, and site-specific interventions presented by Pioneer Works the second Sunday of every month. The series showcases artists in residence along with musical performances and DJs, curated by Olivier Conan.

Open Studios of artists in residence: Clocktower Productions,Young New Yorkers, Robyn Hasty, David Horvitz, Emily Spivak, Micah Ganske,Sara Magenheimer, Matthew Putman, Brett Swenson, Alex Verhaest, and Zach Nader.

INTERVENTIONS

Clocktower Radio (http://clocktower.org/) will stream artist interviews and the live music during the Second Sunday activities on October 12 at clocktower.org/listen. Visitors are welcome to visit the station’s 3rd floor studio suite at Pioneer Works during the broadcasts.

slowLab: The Netherlands-based design research platform slowLab intervenes at Pioneer Works to dialogue with the Red Hook community on the topic Slow Economy. At 5pm, Henriette Waal presents her community brewing concept, ‘Edible Landscape – Outdoor Brewery’ with a super-local view to the Red Hook landscape. At 6pm, Jeanne van Heeswijk joins slowLab for a Slow dialogue about “radicalizing the local�?: the process of local communities coming together to imagine and co-produce their own futures. slowLab’s intervention at Pioneer Works is part of a series of programming engagements in NYC, developed in collaboration with Pratt Institute with support from the Creative Industries Fund NL. All programs contribute to an upcoming exhibition, ‘Dust, Dialogue and Uncertainty: Slow knowledge in design thinking and practice,’ that opens on December 4th, 2014 at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery.

Robotic Church: The Robotic Church is a site-specific installation and performance created by Chico MacMurtrie and Amorphic Robot Works. During this 45-minute performance featuring 42 pneumatic and motorized automata, MacMurtrie transforms the former Norwegian Seaman’s Church into a potent allegory about the human condition, evolution and nature. This year’s Robotic Church performance series is presented from October 4th to November 2nd in association with FuturePerfect Productions.

The Robotic Church will present a special performance in an open house format from 6-7PM on Sunday October 12th in conjunction with Pioneer Work’s Second Sunday. No reservation required. This intervention will be on view at The Robotic Church: 111 Pioneer St. Brooklyn, NY 11231 (between Richards St. and Van Brunt St.)

 

LIVE MUSIC

CUDDLE MAGIC Chamber Pop band Cuddle Magic uses a quirky blend of instruments to create complex arrangements of deceptively simple folk melodies with perpetually shifting rhythms. In spite of the ensemble’s large size and wide-ranging instrumentation, their music is spacious and accessible. Subtle vocal interplay, inventive orchestration, and wry and surreal lyrics combine to create music at once dreamlike and powerfully direct. Their latest album featured their collaboration with acclaimed toy pianist Phyllis Chen.

BROOKLYN QAWWALI PARTY Inspired by recordings of the late great Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Brook Martinez founded Brook’s Qawwali Party in 2004 as an experiment. What would happen if New York jazz musicians were to play and improvise around the melodies of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan? From this idea, Brooklyn Qawwali Party was born. BQP consists of five horns, three percussionists, guitar, acoustic bass and harmonium. The exuberant sound of BQP has been enthusiastically welcome across the globe.

Rachel Sussman The Oldest Living Things in The World

For the past decade, Brooklyn-based contemporary artist Rachel Sussman has been ​​​ researching, working with scientists, and traveling all over the world to photograph ​ ​continuously living organisms 2,000 years old and older. Her work spans disciplines, continents, and millennia: it’s part art and part science, has an innate environmentalism, and is underscored by an existential incursion into Deep Time.

She’s captured everything from multi-millennial trees to 5,500-year-old moss to half-million-year-old bacteria, traveling from Antarctica to Greenland to the Mojave Desert to the Australian Outback. ​Her New York Times bestselling book ​of the same title was​ published in April 2014, with forewords by Hans Ulrich Obrist and scientist Carl Zimmer.

Sussman​ is a TED speaker, a Guggenheim, NYFA and MacDowell Colony Fellow, and a member of Al Gore’s Climate Reality Leadership Corps. S​he was awarded the LACMA Lab Art​ + Tech grant to ​produce new work exploring Deep Time and deep space​ with SpaceX and NASA JPL. Her work can be found in university, museum, corporate, and private collections.
