Second Sundays is a free event series that engages Pioneer Works disciplines through live music, food, artists’ open studios, and interactive programs.

Pioneer Works, the astronomers of Columbia University, and the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York host various stargazing events. We welcomed thousands of New Yorkers into our garden for The Great American Eclipse and regularly bring our telescopes out for public viewing, including most Second Sundays.



Astronomy in the Pioneer Works Garden

Shuta Hasunuma’s Compositions features a selection of new works created both in Japan and during Hasunuma’s Pioneer Works residency in winter 2017. The exhibition is the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States. It gathers together sculpture and videos centered on sounds from everyday life, which probe the circumstances and frameworks surrounding human existence.

Hasunuma’s sound works center on environmental and electronic sounds and extensive collaborations with diverse musicians including Akio Suzuki, Keiji Haino, and Fluxus member Mieko Shiomi. By molding, arranging, and visualizing sounds in time and space, Hasunuma’s practice seeks to answer the question: How can something intangible like sound or music be transferred between human beings in physical, material form? Hasunuma creates situations and environments that bring together people of different ages, genders, and ethnicities. Through their interaction they seek to illuminate afresh exactly what it is we call “sound” or “music.”

Created during Hasunuma’s residency, the video work Walking Score in Red Hook (2017) follows the artist as he walks through the Brooklyn neighborhood with a mic dragging behind him on the ground, alongside footage of earlier iterations of the performance filmed in Tokyo and Beijing. In STUDIES (2018), Hasunuma creates sculptures that exist neither as classifiable objects nor as instruments designed for sound-making. In these three-dimensional works, multiple videos and sounds play simultaneously in the same space. These videos are a record of a dozen people engaging collaboratively with the sculptures, producing sounds as if they were performing music. Visitors will have their own opportunity to engage with the sculptural works to produce sounds and create new actions in the present time frame.

To celebrate this opening, Hasunuma will perform with U-zhaan immediately following the exhibition’s reception on Friday, February 23rd. U-zhaan is a Japanese tabla player who worked with Hasunuma on their collaborative album 2 Tone, to be released in Japan this spring.

Mary Helena Clark is an artist working in film, video, and installation. Her work uses the language of collage to explore dissociative states through cinema, bringing together disparate subjects and styles that suggest an exterior logic or code. Using the conventions of narrative, language, and genre, her films explore shifting subjectivities and the limits of the embodied camera. Clark’s work has recently been exhibited at DOCUMENT, Chicago; Künstlerhaus, Stuttgart, Germany; JOAN, Los Angeles; and the 2017 Whitney Biennial, New York; and at festivals including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the New York Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Mary Helena Clark

Gözde İlkin lives and works in Istanbul, Turkey. She studied painting at the Fine Arts Faculty of Mimar Sinan University and is pursuing a master’s degree at Marmara University in Istanbul. Using mainly stitching, drawing, and painting as well as video and sound installations, İlkin constructs forms of confrontational interactions within the motifs of found domestic fabrics. In the process, she refers to social and political relationships/manipulation, borders, power issues, gender attitudes, and urban transformation. 

Selected solo exhibitions include: The Trap, Gypsum Gallery, Cairo (2016); Stained Estate at Françoise Heitsch Gallery, Munich (2015); and Please Clear the Dance Floor, artSümer Gallery, Istanbul (2010). Selected group exhibitions include the 15th Istanbul Biennale, A Good Neighbour (2017); Spaceliner, Arter, Istanbul (2015); and No one belongs here more than you, 54th October Salon, Belgrade (2013). Between 2006 and 2013, she worked with Gülcin Aksoy and Yasemin Nur Erkalır as a collective called AtılKunst.

Gözde İlkin

Louis Fratino lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He is currently making paintings and drawings that focus on homoerotic love. Figures and interiors are generated by mixing art historical references in an attempt to conjure feelings of intimacy. 

Fratino attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, graduating in 2015 with a degree in painting. He also attended the Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art and was awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship to Berlin in 2016. He recently had a solo exhibition at Antoine Levi, Paris. Other exhibitions include Matisse + Fratino, Cabinet Printemps, Düsseldorf (2018); So I've got you, Thierry Goldberg, New York (2017); and Practice in Leisure, Galería Mascota, Mexico DF, (2017).

NIC Kay is from the Bronx. 

They currently occupy several liminal spaces. 

They are a person who makes performances and creates/organizes performative spaces. 

They are obsessed with the act and process of moving, the change of place, production of space, position, and the meaning gleaned from the shifting of perspective. 

Their current trans disciplinary projects explore movement as a place of reclamation. 

NIC has performed and shown work internationally and in The United States.

NIC Kay

Autumn Knight is an interdisciplinary artist working with performance, installation and text. Her work primarily addresses conventions of racial and gender identity, psychotherapy, and art access. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and holds an M.A. in Drama Therapy from New York University. Her performance work has been in exhibitions at various institutions including: DiverseWorks, Project Row Houses, and Blaffer Art Museum, all in Houston; Crystal Bridges Museum, Bentonville, Arkansas; Skowhegan Space, New York; The New Museum, New York; The Contemporary Art Museum, Houston; and most recently The Studio Museum in Harlem. Knight is from Houston, Texas, and is currently based in New York, NY.

Simon Hanes founded Tredici Bacci, a 14 piece chamber-rock orchestra, as a vehicle by which to explore his near-manic obsession with music from Italian films of the 1960s and 70s. Since then, the NY-based group has been performing their celebratory and transgressive approach to a largely overlooked musical lineage.

Gözde İlkin lives and works in Istanbul, Turkey. She studied painting at the Fine Arts Faculty of Mimar Sinan University and is pursuing a master’s degree at Marmara University in Istanbul. Using mainly stitching, drawing, and painting as well as video and sound installations, İlkin constructs forms of confrontational interactions within the motifs of found domestic fabrics. In the process, she refers to social and political relationships/manipulation, borders, power issues, gender attitudes, and urban transformation. 
Selected solo exhibitions include: The Trap, Gypsum Gallery, Cairo (2016); Stained Estate at Françoise Heitsch Gallery, Munich (2015); and Please Clear the Dance Floor, artSümer Gallery, Istanbul (2010). Selected group exhibitions include the 15th Istanbul Biennale, A Good Neighbour (2017); Spaceliner, Arter, Istanbul (2015); and No one belongs here more than you, 54th October Salon, Belgrade (2013). Between 2006 and 2013, she worked with Gülcin Aksoy and Yasemin Nur Erkalır as a collective called AtılKunst.

Louis Fratino lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He is currently making paintings and drawings that focus on homoerotic love. Figures and interiors are generated by mixing art historical references in an attempt to conjure feelings of intimacy.

Fratino attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, graduating in 2015 with a degree in painting. He also attended the Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art and was awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship to Berlin in 2016. He recently had a solo exhibition at Antoine Levi, Paris. Other exhibitions include
