Thanksgiving Closure

Pioneer Works will be closed on 11/28 - 11/29 in observance of Thanksgiving and Native American Heritage Day.

 (IE) is a free-jazz quintet with an experimental punk mentality, that consists of poet/vocalist Camae Ayewa (often known as Moor Mother), bassist Luke Stewart, trumpeter Aquiles Navarro, saxophonist Keir Neuringer, and drummer Tcheser Holmes.

It is a community band playing deeply improvised, rhythm music full of love and social commitment. IE came together spontaneously, organically, in April of 2015 at “Musicians Against Police Brutality,” a day of protest sound and discussion in Brooklyn. All were artists and activists of varying degrees: Philadelphia-based Ayewa and Neuringer, and D.C.-based Stewart as veterans of the Mid-Atlantic noise-hardcore-experimental scene, while Holmes and Navarro as recent New England Conservatory grads. Each of the studio albums that followed — 2020’s Who Sent You? and 2021’s Open The Gates — developed this legend further.

In 2023, IE signed to the fabled Impulse! Records and released its most accomplished work to date, Protect Your Light, on September 8, 2023, primarily recorded at New Jersey’s historic Van Gelder Studios. It features eight examples of how IE’s collaborative composition strategies and Ayewa’s in-communion verses result in some of the most potent music being made in the third decade of the 21st century, music with communal light and love at its heart. Get to that love on time — don’t force history to guide you.

Issei Herr uses the vast sound-world of the cello to expose openness, vulnerability, and a sense of wonder in her intricately looped and layered compositions. On her debut album 

, released in Spring 2023 on NNA Tapes, Issei distills her musical memories as a classically-trained performer and weaves together bold new narratives, centered on themes of possibility, becoming, and transformation. Upon its release, the album received critical praise and attention from platforms such as Bandcamp Daily (as Album of the Day), Stereogum, Our Culture, New Sounds, I Care If You Listen, Foxy Digitalis, and Them, and landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Classical Crossover charts. Her live performance highlights include opening for Geotic at Public Records in NYC, and shows in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Boston.

Trained as a classical cellist at Juilliard, Issei began her performance career as a collaborator - featuring as a solo cellist in live performances of Rachika Nayar’s 

, and premiering a solo cello work by Nico Muhly, amongst many other collaborations.

Issei Herr

Michael Foster is a saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, curator, and improviser based in New York City dealing with various forms of "weird music". His work seeks to bridge the gaps between noise, improvisation, the jazz tradition, and queer theoretical practices. He often prepares his saxophone with an array of objects such as balloons, drum heads, amplification, etc as a method of queering the instrument's musical roles and history.
He works in duos with Ben Bennett, Leila Bordreuil, Lydia Lunch, and Richard Kamerman as The New York Review of Cocksucking. He has worked with William Parker, Weasel Walter, Marina Rosenfeld, Nate Wooley, Sarah Hennies, and many others. He has performed at various venues across North America and Europe, such as BimHuis, Roulette, Issue Project Room, The Stone, The Kitchen, Pioneer Works and many more. In addition to his work as a performer, he co-founded "Queer Trash", a curatorial platform for LGBTQIA+ artists engaged in experimental performance practices. "Queer Trash" was selected as the 2018 Suzanne Fiol Curatorial Fellow at Issue Project Room.

Michael Foster

Composer, cellist, producer, arranger, etc. Studied with violinist Michael White (Pharoah Sanders, John Handy) and cellist Walter Grey (Kronos Quartet). Creates music for cello & electronics and composes for concert, theater, film, dance. Founding member of Ghost Quartet with Dave Malloy, Gelsey Bell, and Brittain Ashford. Music Director & Conductor for Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe’s Candyman performances. Composer for films including The Saint of the Impossible (dir. Marc Wilkins). Played/collaborated with artists including The Antlers, Ashwini Ramaswami, Filastine, Randall Dunn, Zola Jesus, Arun Ramamurthy, Jim Jarmusch, Jessica Pavone, DJ/rupture, Hiro Kone, Andrew Drury, Aditya Kalyanpur, Eyvind Kang, Jessika Kenney, Wally Shoup, Reggie Watts, Steve Von Till, Sleater-Kinney, Modest Mouse, Baby Copperhead, and many more. Currently resides in New York City.

Brent Arnold

 is a songwriter/composer/producer with an artistic voice that reaches into several disciplines, some of these being radio, film, and journalism. His current musical output exists somewhere between jazz, soul, and psych rock, but he considers himself a student of all areas of music, and intends to cover as much sonic and thematic ground as possible over his artistic life. His work explores such themes as self-exploration, self determination, love and its iterations, isolation, and black cultural context. His recent collaborations include work with TELFAR, Dweller, and Locally Grown TV amongst others.

Khari Lucas

Brooklyn-based Corrine Jasmin is a poet, musician, celebrated writer, and multidisciplinary artist creating to cement a Black future.

The powerhouse and dynamic performance artist shared stages with Flo Milli, opening for her Pittsburgh tour stop, and is a back-to-back Brooklyn Poetry Slam Champion. Her music is reflective, vast and experimental in nature. Move Through, her debut single, was accompanied by a self-directed and edited film and followed by (micro) album: Fever Dream Insomniac.

Jasmin has performed around the country and at spaces like BRIC, The Andy Warhol Museum, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, August Wilson Center, and Carnegie Museum of Art. She’s also a former Kelly Strayhorn Theater artist-in-residence.

Corrine Jasmin

HxH is the improvisatory electro-acoustic duo of Lester St. Louis and Chris Williams. The duo utilizes a mix of trumpet, cello and electronics to build worlds traversing through acoustic sound, grainy textures, expansive pools of sounds, breaks, cuts and beats. The approach is conceived as an expansiveness that holds a personal intimacy. HxH wants to bring the listeners in, tune them to the experience and take a long trip. HxH functions as a vehicle to bring together the mass of references and influences Chris and Lester share and create ways to crystalize those ideas in real, expanded time to an experience over minutes or hours.

 is a band from Queens, New York. They write and produce their own music, imbuing it with a reverence for their ancestry, community, and faith. Flowing in various shapes and formations, duendita is a living collaborative project made with family and friends across mediums and cities.

 is a vocalist, musician, songwriter, and teaching artist who has been living and working in Philadelphia for nearly a decade. Under the stage moniker "Honeychile", Graham explores their Black American identity with an interest in fusing the sonic and lyrical expressions of both a hip hop emcee and jazz diva. As an artist educator, Graham teaches a school and community-based complaint choir program and works with young people and their support teams to help them observe and process the charged world around them, artistically express a need for critical change, and create original songs and productions with an emphasis on humor, heart, and healing.

Becca 'Honeychile' Graham

Ciarra Black is a music producer, sound artist, and DJ specializing in experimental sounds. After spending 5 years in Berlin, Ciarra recently moved back to Brooklyn where she continues to develop her artistic practice. During her time living in Europe, Ciarra toured extensively and was able to test her work on state of the art sound systems. These experiences gave new visions and inspirations to her work in the fields of immersive sound, sound design, and club music.

Ciarra has performed at many notable venues and festivals including MoMA PS1, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Berghain (Berlin), Sound of Stockholm Festival (Sweden) and Unsound Dislocation Festival (Armenia).

Ciarra Black

 is a Hong Kong-born electroacoustic composer and sound artist working in California and New York. Her work explores the coexistence of polarity, psychoacoustics in binaural beats, and equal-loudness contour. With the immediacy of tension and release, she navigates between oppositions, transforming deafening noise into meditative stance. Her compositions, developed during recovery from a concussion, utilize brainwave entrainment, time shifts, and changes of neurological responses to DELTA, THETA, ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA waves as their materials and focal point. With memories of condensed cities, she gravitates towards frequencies of close-ranged airplanes, polyrhythmic occurrences, out-of-body experiences, sustained harmonics intersected with musique concrète, and distorted speech as lost speech.

Amma Ateria

For this residency, Katherine Young and Yarn/Wire collaborate to create the outdoor installation and performance piece 

’s electroacoustic music and sonic art uses expressive noises, curious timbres, and kinetic structures. Collaboration is central to her practice. The LAPhil, Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s MusicNOW, Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt, Third Coast Percussion, Ensemble Dal Niente, Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik, and others have commissioned her music. She has worked closely with Wet Ink, Ensemble Nikel, WasteLAnd, Linda Jankowska, and Oliva DePrato. Her installation work has been commissioned by the University of Chicago’s Smart Museum of Art. As a bassoonist and improviser, Katherine amplifies her instrument and employs a flexible electronics setup. She has documented her work on numerous recordings, including her debut with Sam Scranton as Beautifulish (out December 2020 on Shinkoyo) and a duo with Anthony Braxton. She teaches composition, improvisation, and electronic music at Emory University in Atlanta. Young is a 2021 Guggenheim Fellow in Music Composition. 

 is a New York-based percussion and piano quartet dedicated to the promotion of creative, experimental new music. Described by The Brooklyn Rail as “fascinating and exciting, with playing that is precise and full of purpose,” the ensemble is admired globally for the energy and precision it brings to performances of today’s most adventurous compositions. Founded in 2005, the ensemble seeks to expand the representation of composers so that it might begin to better reflect our communities and experience new creative potential.

Yarn/Wire appears internationally at prominent festivals and venues including the Lincoln Center Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall, Rainy Days Festival (Luxembourg), Ultima Festival (Norway), Transit Festival (Belgium), Dublin SoundLab, Monday Evening Concerts (Los Angeles), Contempuls Festival (Prague), Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York’s Miller Theatre at Columbia University, River-to-River Festival, La MaMa Theatre, Festival of New American Music, and London’s Barbican Centre. Their numerous commissions include works from composers such as Enno Poppe, Michael Gordon, George Lewis, Ann Cleare, Raphaël Cendo, Peter Evans, Alex Mincek, Thomas Meadowcroft, Misato Mochizuki, Tristan Murail, Sam Pluta, Tyondai Braxton, Kate Soper, and Øyvind Torvund. Katherine Young & Yarn/Wire

Imogen Teasley-Vlautin is a composer, songwriter, and producer from Los Angeles. Their work has ranged from film scoring to long-form electronic music composition and performance. They’re now shifting their focus to songwriting and production, traversing themes of grief, love, black freedom, and spirituality. Imogen’s music has been featured in publications such as Fact Mag and SF Weekly, and they were a recent artist-in-residence at This Will Take Time.

Imogen Teasley-Vlautin

Kwami Winfield is from Jersey City, NJ and has been based in NYC for the past few years. A multi-disciplinary type who plays trumpet, drums, electronics, trash, Kwami creates collections of visual creations, rocks, pez dispensers. Her music can touch on the relationship of externalized sound and the ancillary, grotesque functions required to produce them. Looking for windows between noisy circuits and noisy bodies, both bubbling from complications to resource consumption and procurement.

In 2022 she released “Hearts”, a 20 something track collection of noises and songs, on phone/tape label Call Waitn as Soless Dialtone.

Kwami Winfield

is heavily invested in decolonization and deconstruction of borders physical, mental and musical” (NPR, 2024). Spanning free jazz, punk, noise, and Indian devotional music, Kidambi crafts subversive sounds challenging hegemony. Based in New York City-Lenapehoking, Kidambi is an improviser and composer focused on critical intervention, responding to our fraught times, in collaboration with potent musicians including Luke Stewart, Angel & Demons with Darius Jones, Neti-Neti with Matt Evans, Moor Mother, Mary Halvorson, William Parker, Matana Roberts. She is also the composer for the anti-colonial films of Suneil Sanzgiri, exhibited at Brooklyn Museum, International Film Festival Rotterdam, and Blackstar Fest. Leading the protest ensemble Elder Ones which recently released its incendiary third album

on We Jazz, her work garners critical acclaim from the 

New York Times, NPR, Wire Magazine, Fader, The Quietus, Pitchfork, Bandcamp Daily 

Kidambi has toured extensively in North America, Europe and Latin America at venues and festivals including Big Ears, Lincoln Center, Whitney Museum, MoMA PS1, Kennedy Center, Newport Jazz Festival, Rewire, Unsound, Moers, Vancouver Jazz Festival, Suoni per il Popolo (Montreal), Skaņu Mežs (Latvia), Jazz em Agosto, OutFest (Portugal), SESC (Brazil), CNA (Colombia) and Berlin Jazzfest. Kidambi has received grants and residencies from Pioneer Works (Working Artist Fellowship, Residency), EMPAC, Bucareli 69 (CDMX), Mid-Atlantic Arts, NYFA and Jerome Foundation. An educator, activist, and co-founder of South Asian Artists in Diaspora, Musicians Against Police Brutality and Amplify Palestine, Kidambi organizes with several artist-activist collectives. As a scholar and educator with degrees from Columbia and CUNY, she has taught and engaged in decolonizing curriculum at Brooklyn College, Bennington College and The New School and has given workshops and lectures at NYU, Harvard, Oberlin, Wesleyan University, UC Irvine, Bennington College, UC Santa Cruz, the Royal Conservatory in the Hague, and KM Conservatory (India).

Kidambi is a Working Artist Fellow. The Working Artist Fellowship is part of The Rockefeller Foundation’s The Artist Impact Initiative. 


Amirtha Kidambi

 is a composer, choreographer, and vocalist focusing on the empathic potential and agency developed by performance. Their performances have been shown at MoMA, Mana Contemporary, MoMA PS1, New Museum, National Sawdust, Knockdown Center, and throughout Europe, amongst other places. 

 was Kinlaw's first LP release on Bayonet Records.

Kinlaw

 (formerly known as Tengu Yawn) is Dan Ahrendt, a producer and vocalist in service to whatever his musical hemorrhage is currently spewing out. After half a life lived between Tacoma and Seattle in the Pacific Northwest, years in local music merged with a moment of intense physical trauma, leading to a search for control and exploration through mutated electronic formats. In Seattle, Dahjyn performed and curated in club and DIY settings, transforming and boldening a dark, eclectic mingling of noisy industrial pummeling with equal parts ephemeral and guttural song. He relocated to Brooklyn in 2019, and released his debut EP 

 in 2021 via London’s Most Dismal Swamp.

Dan Jyn Suk Ahrendt

Veronica “Vern” Avola is a composer, multimedia artist, instructor and champion of friendship, born in Italy and based in Portland, Oregon. She founded EMS Records.

Avola’s solo sound works uses deep electronic sounds to geomap the hidden layers that also come with a given “present moment”; from the guttural subterranean or the hallways of the earthly punk and DIY culture to consensual abduction and flight. Avola’s compositions hold space for these physical stretches that become emblems of safety when society faces a truth in zero control within a political predestination. In this process Avola brings an ability back to the listener to think and exist outside of man’s algorithm.

Since 2007, Avola has performed this work internationally and has released several albums.

Veronica Avola

 is a Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and scholar. She has been described by the New York Times as “one of New York’s most adventurous musicians” and “a charismatic and fiercely intelligent performer.” She is a core member of thingNY, Varispeed, and the Chutneys. Her soundwalk Cairns, created with Joseph White, is ongoing at Green-Wood Cemetery. Her work has been performed throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. She has released multiple albums on Gold Bolus Recordings. She is a resident artist at the HERE Arts Center, where she is developing the opera mɔːnɪŋ, and she has received awards from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Opera America, and the Japan Foundation.

FAUZIA is a multi-disciplinary artist hailing from London. First breaking through as a DJ, her roots began in the context of dance music via NTS. During the pandemic she shifted her efforts towards production which saw her release projects showcasing her own voice, while collaborating with singers Kelela and George Riley; picking up glowing press from Resident Advisor, Mixmag, Pitchfork, Crack and more in the process . Debuting her live show at Wysing Polyphonic in 2021, FAUZIA went on to support artists Loraine James & Space Afrika. FAUZIA sold out her first headline at Southbank Centre’s Purcell room, accompanied by her band. Working on her official debut, she is yet to begin...

Singer/songwriter/producer Sid Sriram represents a collision point of radically different worlds; a true hybridist. Sriram was born in Chennai, India. His family moved to the San Francisco/Bay Area suburbs when he was one. His duality of cultural roots is integral to Sriram’s identity. Carnatic music is his foundation and fountainhead. He graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Production and Engineering. He is a singular force in the world of Indian film music. Sid Sriram's music creates a bold cross section where traditionally disconnected meet and live with one another.

Tony Cruise is a global sound artist who cultivates ideas for musicians, institutions, and brands - including scoring film, sound and instrument design and consulting. In 2020, Cruise was selected as one of ten global artists to attend the Factory Berlin/Beats by Dre/Sonar +D Artist Residency. He has since been shortlisted for the Soho House Design Prize, commissioned to compose for London Fashion Week 2021, and chosen to be Pioneer Works’ (NY) January 2022 Music Resident.

Tony Cruise is a sound artist who cultivates ideas for musicians, institutions, and brands—including scoring film, sound and instrument design, and consulting as well as the development of special projects such as software, books, installations, and limited-run merchandising.

Tony Cruise

 is a percussionist and sound healer based in Brooklyn, NY. He studied jazz and world music while at Brown University before moving to NYC in 2008. He's recorded and toured with jazz-odyssey ensemble Dave Harrington, spiritual-psyche vocalist Angel Deradoorian, and dark-dance magician Matthew Dear. Since 2018 he's been a student and practitioner of sound healing, having now offered over 300 sound meditations in various settings. Samer continues training under and working alongside leaders in the field through Sage Academy (Woodstock, NY) and 9 Ways Academia (Perkasie, PA). Recently, Samer consulted for the Rubin museum's gong installation, and created an ongoing monthly live soundhealing-meets-improv performance series called Spontaneous Space.

Lavender has albums and recordings featured on the labels Ecstatic Peace!, RVNG Intl, Primitive Languages, and Hot Releases.

C. Lavender

Chloe Alexandra Thompson is a Canadian sound artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Thompson is an interdisciplinary artist and musician composing works of sonic minimalism that envelope listeners into a state of equilibrium and fill rooms with discrete frequencies. Her work creates spatial sound art composed using audio programming software and acoustic instruments. Focused on live performance and spatial intervention, Thompson engineers multi-channel interplay of psychoacoustics, live-processed field recordings, and isolated frequencies to produce felt effects on the body. Fascinated by digital technology’s seemingly endless possibilities for sound experimentation, Thompson routinely collaborates with other artists to explore new avenues for acoustic and physical environments and experiences.

Chloe Alexandra Thompson is a Canadian sound artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Thompson is an interdisciplinary artist and musician composing works of sonic minimalism that envelope listeners into a state of equilibrium and fill rooms with discrete frequencies. Her work creates spatial sound art composed using audio programming software and acoustic instruments. Focused on live performance and spatial intervention, Thompson engineers multi-channel interplay of psychoacoustics, live-processed field recordings, and isolated frequencies to produce felt effects on the body. Fascinated by digital technology&#8217;s seemingly endless possibilities for sound experimentation, Thompson routinely collaborates with other artists to explore new avenues for acoustic and physical environments and experiences.

Engaging at the intersection of singing, movement, Deep Listening, and music-theatre, the Chor simultaneously practices fierce individuality and radical surrender to group consciousness. Described by

Miriam Parker (b. New York) is a multidisciplinary artist who uses movement, media and sculpture/installation who lives and works in New York. Parker is a CBA Fellow ’21 in collaboration with Marisa Michelson. She has performed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; PS1 MoMA, New York; The Fridman Gallery, New York; a residency at École Normale Supérieure, Paris; at the Every Women Biennial, New York; Survey Dover Plains, NY; at Vision Festival through consecutive years; the Satellite Art Fair, in Miami, FL; Clement Soto Velez Cultural and Education Center, New York; Whitebox ArtCenter, New York; a month residency at Governors Island in the House of Poetics curated by Cooper Union; among others.

She is co-founder and collaborator of Lost Voyage, a multimedia collaborative work led by women artists, as well as Inner City Projects, a multimedia collaborative work group with Jo Wood Brown, based in New York.

The group deconstructs traditional connotations of their instruments through a deviant juxtaposition of ugliness vs. beauty in the form of simple, visceral songs. Through unorthodox tunings, amplification, and effects, Donovan and Markiewicz are able to mine unsettling depths, balancing deep euphoria and mourning.

She earned her Masters in Environmental Studies at the Evergreen State College with a focus on ant biodiversity. Lisa uses field recording, writing, and music composition to document inconspicuous elements of ecosystems with the goal of accentuating environmental issues, often in collaboration with ecologists. Her recent work includes investigations of endangered

He has written scores for film and television, published a book of tablature, and toured extensively in the US and abroad for more than 20 years, performing at festivals such as Reading and Leeds, Pitchfork Music, Primavera Sound, and Fuji Rock. He has released four albums as Birthmark and is a contributing member of American Football, Joan of Arc, and Make Believe.

Motivated by the history of Western misconception and opposition towards Muslims and the Islamic faith, Saint Abdullah began writing music to serve as cultural translators, with the goal of challenging stereotypes and acting as a conduit between unnecessary enemies. Saint Abdullah is the project of Mohammad and Mehdi, New York-based Iranian-Canadian brothers, creating sounds largely inspired by the religious, political, and cultural history of the Middle East.

Shayna Dunkelman is a musician and percussionist based in Brooklyn, NY.

Dunkelman is known for her versatile and unique techniques, and use of electronics to access a sonic pallet not found in acoustic percussion. Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan to an Indonesian mother and an American father, Dunkelman became a multi-instrumentalist performing alongside her mother. In addition to solo performances, Dunkelman tours with Du Yun, Balún, Emily Wells, Peptalk, Ali Sethi, and her percussion duo Nomon with her sister Nava Dunkelman.

Dunkelman has also performed with pioneers of avant-garde experimental musicians such as Yuka C. Honda, John Zorn, Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore, and Xiu Xiu.

Over the years, YATTA has shared the stage with musicians like Cardi B and The Sun Ra Arkestra, creating multimedia performances that tour astrally, nationally, and globally. Yatta has performed at MOMA PS1, MOMA, The Getty, Sonic Acts Festival, and NTS x The Tate virtual festival. Their music has been highlighted in magazines like Pitchfork, Tiny Mixtapes, The Quietus, Fact Mag, Nylon, and The Wire. They are a former artist-in-residence of Clocktower Radio, Elsewhere Museum, Otion Front, and Flux Factory.
